Amazon Bedrock is a fully managed service from Amazon Web Services (AWS) that gives programs access to foundation models: large AI models trained on broad data that other software adapts to many tasks. AWS runs the servers, and the customer calls the models through an API (an interface that another program calls over the internet).
Bedrock supports more than 100 foundation models from providers that include Amazon, Anthropic, DeepSeek, Moonshot AI, MiniMax, OpenAI and xAI. A program sends a request to the bedrock-runtime endpoint through one of several APIs (Messages, Responses, Chat Completions, Converse or Invoke) and receives the model's answer. Other parts add a company's own data to the answers (Knowledge Bases and fine-tuning), block harmful content (Guardrails), and build and run AI agents (AgentCore). AWS states that Bedrock does not store or use customer data to train models.
Bedrock is billed per use. The price depends on the modality, the provider and the model, usually per million input and output tokens (a token is a short piece of text). Batch inference, where requests are processed later in bulk, costs 50% less for some models.
