An AI company that trains the Kimi family of large language models and sells access to them through the Kimi API, billed per token.

What Moonshot AI is

Written from its maker's own pages, read on 28 October 2026.

Moonshot AI is an AI company that trains large language models (LLMs), programs trained on large amounts of text to understand and generate language and code. Its model family is called Kimi. The company runs the Kimi chat app and the Kimi API Platform for developers.

The current flagship models, Kimi K3 and Kimi K3.1 Pro, accept text and images and have a context window of 1 million tokens: the amount of text a model can read in one request, where a token is a piece of a word. Kimi K3 has 2.8 trillion parameters, the learned numbers inside the model. A developer sends requests to the Kimi API and can use tool calling, in which the model asks the program to run a function; official tools include web search, memory, Python code execution and URL fetching. Moonshot AI publishes some models openly on GitHub, including Kimi K3.

The API is pay per use. Each model has a price per million input tokens and per million output tokens, with a lower price for cached input.
