Oxford Languages

Oxford University Press's language-data business, which licenses dictionary data, word lists, phonetic transcriptions and recorded pronunciations to software makers as datasets and an API.

What Oxford Languages is

Written from its maker's own pages, read on 28 October 2026.

Oxford Languages is the language-data business of Oxford University Press. Its lexicographers, linguists and language technologists compile dictionary content, including the Oxford English Dictionary, and license it to companies as datasets and APIs.

Its pronunciation data combines IPA transcriptions (the International Phonetic Alphabet, a standard set of symbols for speech sounds), stress patterns and syllable boundaries, and audio recorded by professional voice artists, with metadata such as preferred and variant forms and regional labels. It covers American and British English, Hindi and Spanish, and is delivered as bulk datasets, through an API, or as tailored subsets. The Oxford Dictionaries API covers 35 languages, returns definitions, pronunciations, word origins, translations and inflections, and can be used from Java, Node, Objective-C, Python, Swift and .NET/C#.

Datasets are licensed after contact with the sales team. The self-service Oxford Dictionaries API has a free sandbox with 500 calls; the pages read show no prices.
