GitHub

A hosting service for Git repositories: it stores a team's source code with its full change history, and adds code review (pull requests), issue tracking and automated builds.

What GitHub is

Written from its maker's own pages, read on 13 October 2026.

GitHub is a platform for building software, made by GitHub Inc. It is based on Git, an open-source version control system that tracks changes to files: each developer works on a copy of a project, records a history of changes and merges the work with the changes of others. GitHub hosts these projects, called repositories, in the cloud and adds tools for planning and teamwork. Its about page counts more than 225 million developers and 800 million repositories.

Developers push their commits to a repository on GitHub. A pull request proposes a change, and reviewers discuss it before it is merged. Issues and Projects track tasks. GitHub Actions runs CI/CD workflows (continuous integration and delivery: automatic builds, tests and deployments) for each change. Webhooks send an HTTP request to an outside server when an event happens, such as a push, so that the server can deploy the new code. GitHub Copilot, an AI assistant, writes and reviews code, and Codespaces starts a development environment in the cloud.

GitHub is a hosted service. A free plan includes unlimited public and private repositories; paid plans are charged per user each month.
