Cursor

A code editor with a built-in AI assistant: the developer describes a change in plain language, and the editor writes or edits the code across the project.

What Cursor is

Written from its maker's own pages, read on 13 October 2026.

Cursor is an AI coding agent and code editor made by Anysphere, Inc.; SpaceX completed its acquisition of Cursor in August 2026. A coding agent is a program built on a large language model that reads a codebase, plans changes, writes code and runs commands on behalf of the developer.

The developer describes a task in plain language. The agent explores the files, makes a plan, edits the code and shows the changes for review. Cursor runs as a desktop editor, as a command-line tool in the terminal, inside Slack, and in GitHub, where it reviews pull requests. Cloud agents work on their own computers, in parallel. For each task the developer picks a model from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google (Gemini), SpaceXAI (Grok) or Cursor itself. Rules, skills, plugins and MCP servers (Model Context Protocol, a standard way to connect an AI model to outside tools) adjust its behavior.

Cursor is sold as a subscription, with a free plan of limited AI use. The cheapest paid plan offers only Grok models; on the others, models of other companies are billed separately by usage. Team plans are priced per user.
