ChatGPT Ads is OpenAI's advertising system inside ChatGPT, its AI chat assistant. Ads appear below ChatGPT's responses, are labeled as ads and stay separate from the answers. Each ad shows the advertiser's name and logo, a title, a description, an image and a landing page link. OpenAI does not show ads to users on the Plus, Pro or Business plans, or to accounts identified as belonging to people under 18.
Advertisers work in Ads Manager, a web tool in beta, where they create campaigns, set a budget and a goal, and add ads one by one or by bulk upload. Instead of exact keywords, an ad group carries context hints that describe the topics where the product fits. The system picks ads with a relevance-weighted second-price auction (the winner pays about what was needed to beat the next bid) that considers the conversation's context. Reports show impressions, clicks, spend and conversions; conversions are measured in Ads Manager or with UTM parameters on landing page addresses.
Pricing is set by auction: the advertiser sets a budget and a maximum bid per thousand impressions (CPM) or per click (CPC).
