Devin

An autonomous AI coding agent from Cognition: it takes a programming task, writes, runs and tests the code in its own workspace, and opens a pull request.

What Devin is

Written from its maker's own pages, read on 28 October 2026.

Devin is an AI coding agent made by Cognition, an applied AI lab that builds software agents. An AI coding agent is a program, driven by a large language model, that plans and carries out programming tasks with real tools instead of only suggesting code.

A team gives Devin a task in its web app, in Slack or Microsoft Teams, or from a Linear or Jira ticket. Devin works in its own workspace with a shell, a code editor and a browser: it writes, runs and tests code, checks web apps in the browser, and opens a pull request on GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket. Engineers can follow each step and take over in the editor. Typical tasks are bug fixes, new features, code migrations, framework upgrades, unit tests and pull request reviews. Devin runs in the cloud or on a developer's own machine, and an API is available.

Devin is a subscription service. Each plan has a usage quota; there is a free plan with a light quota, team plans, and an enterprise option that runs in the customer's own virtual private cloud.
