Google AI Mode is a generative AI search experience inside Google Search, made by Google and powered by its Gemini models. Generative AI here means a model that writes a new answer in its own words instead of only listing pages. AI Mode answers questions in a conversation, with follow-up questions and links to web pages. A related feature, AI Overviews, shows a short AI summary with links above the normal results for some searches.
A person types, speaks, or uploads a photo; AI Mode reads the question with multimodal models (models that handle text, images and voice), organizes the information and writes an answer with links to supporting websites. Google says both features may use a technique it calls query fan-out: they run multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources and combine the results. A page can appear as a supporting link only if Google has indexed it and can show it with a snippet; there are no additional requirements.
AI Mode is free to use in Google Search. Google calls it experimental and warns that answers may contain mistakes.
