n8n (pronounced n-eight-n, short for "nodemation") is a workflow automation platform made by the company n8n. A workflow is a chain of steps, called nodes, that starts from a trigger, such as an incoming webhook or a message queue, and then reads, transforms and sends data between apps. Workflows are built on a visual canvas, and a step can also run custom JavaScript or Python code.
n8n has more than 500 native integrations and can call any other API through HTTP requests. Its AI Agent node lets a language model from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google or an open-source project decide which tools to call, with human approval for tool calls when needed, and n8n can act as an MCP server or client. Developers can add their own nodes; community nodes are published to the npm registry and installed from inside n8n.
n8n is fair-code: the source code is public under the Sustainable Use License, and the Community Edition can be self-hosted with Docker. n8n Cloud and the Business and Enterprise plans are subscriptions priced by the number of monthly workflow executions, not by steps or users.
