OpenAI Playground

A web page in OpenAI's API platform where developers write and test prompts against OpenAI models before putting them into their own code.

What OpenAI Playground is

Written from its maker's own pages, read on 28 October 2026.

The Playground is a browser tool in the OpenAI API platform (platform.openai.com) made by OpenAI for building and testing prompts. A prompt is the text instruction, often with examples, that tells a large language model what to do.

In the Chat Playground a developer builds and tests conversational prompts, then moves them into an application. The Generate button writes a prompt, a function definition or a JSON schema from a short description of the task. For prompts it uses meta-prompts, which are prompts that ask the model to write or improve another prompt, based on OpenAI's prompt-engineering guidance; for schemas it uses meta-schemas that produce valid JSON. The Playground sends the same API calls that an application sends.

Use of the Playground is billed like any other API use: its tokens count toward the account's API usage and follow the same per-token prices (a token is a piece of a word).
