What Plate is

Written from its maker's own pages, read on 28 October 2026.

Plate (Plate.js) is an open-source React framework for building rich-text editors, the editing areas in web apps where users write formatted text with headings, lists, tables, links and media. It is maintained in the udecode/plate repository on GitHub; its license names Ziad Beyens, Dylan Schiemann, Joe Anderson and Felix Feng.

Plate has three layers. The platejs package is the core editor runtime with React bindings and editor APIs. The @platejs packages are headless plugins (plugins with behaviour but no built-in styling) for nodes, marks, serialization, collaboration, AI and other editor behaviour. Plate UI is a set of components, kits and editor templates that the shadcn command-line tool copies into the app, so the team owns and edits that code. Templates range from a minimal editor to a Notion-like editor with AI commands, and an MCP setup lets AI coding tools inspect and add Plate components.

Plate is free and open source under the MIT license. Plate Plus, a separate paid offer, sells premium components and a full-stack AI editor template for a one-time price.
