Poetry

An open-source command-line tool for Python projects: it installs the libraries a project depends on at fixed versions and builds and publishes the project as a package.

What Poetry is

Written from its maker's own pages, read on 28 October 2026.

Poetry is a tool for dependency management and packaging in Python. Dependency management means declaring the libraries a project needs and installing compatible versions of them; packaging means building the project into files that other people can install. Poetry is developed in the open on GitHub under the MIT license.

A project describes itself and its dependencies in one pyproject.toml file, which replaces setup.py, requirements.txt, setup.cfg, MANIFEST.in and Pipfile. The command poetry add resolves the versions and writes a lockfile, a file that records the exact version of every package, so that each installation is the same. Poetry keeps each project in an environment isolated from the global Python installation. poetry build makes a source distribution and a wheel (the standard pre-built package format), and poetry publish uploads them to PyPI or to a private repository.

Poetry is free. It needs Python 3.10 or newer and runs on Linux, macOS and Windows.
