Prisma ORM

An open-source ORM for TypeScript and Node.js: developers describe their data model in one schema file and query the database through a generated, type-safe client instead of SQL.

What Prisma ORM is

Written from its maker's own pages, read on 28 October 2026.

Prisma ORM is an open-source ORM for TypeScript and Node.js, made by Prisma. An ORM (object-relational mapper) is a library that lets code read and write database rows as objects instead of hand-written SQL. It works with PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQLite, MongoDB, SQL Server and CockroachDB.

The developer declares models, fields and relations once, in a file called schema.prisma. From it, Prisma generates a typed query client: a call such as db.user.findMany() is checked by the TypeScript compiler, so a wrong field name fails in the editor instead of in production. The prisma migrate command turns schema changes into SQL migrations; it refuses to apply a migration that would destroy data and reports what would have been dropped. Errors carry stable codes and remediation hints that coding agents can read. The same schema and client work on every supported database.

Prisma ORM is free and open source under the Apache 2.0 license. The same company sells hosted products, Prisma Postgres and Prisma Compute.
