Threads is a social media app made by Meta and built by the Instagram team, for sharing text updates and joining public conversations. People log in with their Instagram account. It runs as an app for iOS and Android and on the web.
A post can be up to 500 characters long and can include links, photos and videos up to 5 minutes long. Readers see two feeds: a recommendation feed that mixes posts from followed profiles with recommended content, and a Following feed that shows only posts from followed profiles. Posts are translated automatically, and keyword search, polls and GIFs are available. Since 2025, people can send direct messages and create group chats of up to 50 people. Threads also connects to the fediverse, an open, decentralized social network of independent servers that use the ActivityPub protocol: adult users with public profiles can turn on sharing so that people on servers such as Mastodon can follow them and reply.
Threads is a consumer platform: creating an account and posting are free.
