Visual Studio Code (VS Code) is a source-code editor made by Microsoft: a desktop program for writing and changing the code of software. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, and also in a web browser as VS Code for the Web (vscode.dev). New versions come out every month.
The editor suggests completions while a developer types, navigates between parts of the code, and helps refactor it. JavaScript, TypeScript, CSS and HTML work out of the box; extensions from the VS Code Marketplace add other languages, such as Python, C++, Java and PHP, and other tools. An integrated terminal, a debugger and built-in Git support for source control are part of the editor. AI agents inside the editor plan a task, change code, run commands and repeat until the job is done, locally, in the background or in the cloud.
VS Code is free for private and commercial use. The Code - OSS source code is under the MIT license; the VS Code product itself has a Microsoft product license. Its AI features use GitHub Copilot, which has a free plan with a monthly allowance.
