WeChat

A messaging and social app from Tencent with over 1 billion users, used for chats, calls, sharing posts with friends on Moments, and mobile payments.

What WeChat is

Written from its maker's own pages, read on 28 October 2026.

WeChat is a social communication app from Tencent that serves over 1 billion users. It runs on iOS, Android, macOS and Windows. Users with a China mainland mobile number use Weixin, the Chinese version; WeChat and Weixin are separate services that work together, and outside China the WeChat service is operated by WeChat International Pte. Ltd. in Singapore and, for the UK and Europe, by a Tencent company in Amsterdam.

The app combines text chat with media sharing, HD voice and video calls, Moments and mobile payments. Moments is a feed inside the app: a user posts text, photos or short videos, and friends see the post and can comment. Privacy settings decide who can see each user's Moments, posts can be deleted later, and a translation function translates a post or comment. Payment uses international and China mainland e-wallets.

WeChat is a consumer app: downloading it, chatting and posting on Moments are free.
