Apple Music

Apple's paid music streaming service with over 100 million songs; other apps can read its catalog and create playlists in a user's library through MusicKit.

What Apple Music is

Written from its maker's own pages, read on 28 October 2026.

Apple Music is a music streaming service from Apple, sold as a monthly subscription. It gives access to over 100 million songs without ads, with downloads for offline listening, Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos, lossless audio, real-time lyrics, curated playlists, radio shows and personalized recommendations. It runs on Apple devices and also on Android, Windows, Sonos speakers, smart TVs and the web at music.apple.com.

Other apps connect to it through MusicKit, Apple's developer toolkit for Apple Music. The Apple Music API searches the catalog for songs, albums, artists, playlists and charts. When a user gives permission, an app can add songs to that user's library and create or modify playlists, and it can check whether the user has an active subscription or offer a trial. Requests are signed with developer tokens made from a private key. MusicKit is available as a Swift framework for Apple platforms, as a JavaScript library for the web and as an SDK for Android.

Listeners pay a monthly subscription (individual, family or student plans), with a free first month for new subscribers.
