Railway is a deployment platform, a cloud service that builds an application from its source code and runs it on Railway's servers, made by Railway Corporation. It takes care of servers, networking and databases, so the developer does not configure them by hand.
A project can start from a GitHub repository, from the command line with the railway up command, from a Docker image, or from a ready-made template. Railway reads the code, sets the build settings and deploys each service. A visual canvas shows all services of a project and the connections between them. Databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis and MongoDB run next to the app. Services get private networking, public endpoints with SSL and load balancing, and can scale CPU and memory or add replicas. Each pull request can get its own preview, a rollback restores any earlier version, and logs, metrics and traces are in one dashboard.
It is a hosted service billed by use: Railway charges for the memory, CPU, storage and outgoing traffic of each service by the second. Paid plans include a monthly usage credit, and new accounts start with a free trial.
