Firebase

A set of hosted backend services from Google for web and mobile apps: a database, user login, file storage, hosting and analytics, without servers to manage.

What Firebase is

Written from its maker's own pages, read on 13 October 2026.

Firebase is Google's platform of hosted backend services for mobile and web apps. A backend is the server side of an app: the database, user accounts, file storage and server code. Firebase runs these on Google Cloud, and it provides SDKs (libraries added to the app) for Apple platforms, Android, the Web, Flutter, Unity and C++.

Its products include Cloud Firestore, a NoSQL document database (it stores records as flexible documents, not fixed table rows); the Realtime Database, which syncs data between users in near real time; Cloud Storage for files; Hosting, which serves web apps from a global CDN; and Cloud Functions, which run backend code in response to events without a server to manage. Firebase Authentication signs users in with passwords, phone numbers or providers such as Google and Facebook, based on the standards OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect. FirebaseUI Auth is its open-source, ready-made sign-in screen. Crashlytics reports app crashes, and Cloud Messaging sends notifications.

Firebase is a hosted service. The Spark plan is free within usage limits; on the Blaze plan, use above those limits is billed per unit (pay per use).
