Google Play

Google's app store for Android: it distributes a business's app to phones, charges users for the app, subscriptions and in-app purchases, and keeps a percentage.

What Google Play is

Written from its maker's own pages, read on 28 October 2026.

Google Play is Google's app store for Android: developers publish apps and games there, and users find, install and pay for them. Google states that it reaches more than 2.5 billion users in more than 190 markets. Developers manage their apps in the Google Play Console.

In Play Console a developer uploads a release, tries it with internal, closed or open testing groups, reads pre-launch reports, and then publishes it to production. The store listing can be tested with store listing experiments, and reports cover acquisition, ratings, reviews and app quality (Android vitals). For income, Google Play Billing sells in-app products and subscriptions: Play takes care of the payment, the notifications and the subscription itself, and accepts credit cards and more than 300 local payment methods in more than 65 markets. Price experiments test different price points for in-app products in each market.

On each sale of digital goods Google keeps a service fee that includes a billing fee; the rate is lower for subscriptions and for the first part of a developer's yearly earnings.
