IPinfo is an IP data provider: it sells information about IP addresses, the numbers that identify devices and servers on the internet. The maker, IPinfo Inc., says it has offered this data since 2013.
A program sends an IP address to the IPinfo API and receives a JSON record within about 50 to 200 milliseconds. The record can hold the geolocation (country, region, city, postal code, time zone and approximate coordinates, with an accuracy radius), the ASN (the autonomous system, the network that routes the address, with its name and domain), the mobile carrier, the company, and privacy flags that show whether the address belongs to a VPN, Tor, a proxy, a relay or a hosting provider. IPinfo builds this data from a network of more than 1,000 measurement servers (ProbeNet) and other sources. The same data is also sold as downloadable database files and through cloud-platform integrations.
It is a hosted service. A free tier (IPinfo Lite) gives country-level location and ASN data with unlimited requests; paid tiers are subscriptions billed monthly or yearly, with a fee for each extra 1,000 requests.
