Microsoft Word

Microsoft's word processor for writing and editing documents; developers can extend it with add-ins, web apps that run inside Word.

What Microsoft Word is

Written from its maker's own pages, read on 28 October 2026.

Microsoft Word is a word processor from Microsoft, part of Microsoft 365: an application for writing, formatting and editing documents. It runs as desktop apps on Windows and Mac, on phones and tablets, and in the browser as Word for the web.

A user starts from a blank page or one of thousands of templates, dictates text by voice, checks spelling, grammar and style with Editor, and shares a document so that several people can edit it in real time, with track changes and version history. Copilot, Microsoft's AI assistant, drafts, rewrites and summarizes text on request. Developers extend Word with add-ins: web applications written in JavaScript that open in a task pane next to the document. Through the Word JavaScript API an add-in reads and changes paragraphs, content controls and pictures in the open document, and the same add-in runs in Word on the web, Windows, Mac and iPad.

Word for the web is free with a Microsoft account. The desktop apps and Copilot come with Microsoft 365 subscriptions, billed monthly or yearly.
