Mux

A video API for developers: it stores, processes and streams a product's videos and live streams, and supplies a player, thumbnails, captions and viewing analytics.

What Mux is

Written from its maker's own pages, read on 28 October 2026.

Mux is a video API for developers: a hosted service that stores, processes and streams video and audio for websites and apps, so that a team does not have to build its own video pipeline. It covers on-demand video and live streaming, and adds a video player (Mux Player) and an analytics product (Mux Data).

A program sends a video file to the Mux API, for example by URL, and Mux processes it into an asset, a file prepared for streaming playback, with a playback ID. The app streams the video by that ID, embeds it with Mux Player as a React component, a web component or an iframe, and takes thumbnails, GIFs, clips and auto-generated captions from the same asset. Live streams receive RTMP or SRT input from broadcast software. Webhooks, HTTP callbacks to the developer's server, report events such as an asset becoming ready. Mux Data tracks views, playing time and viewer retention, and Mux Robots runs AI jobs such as caption translation, summarization and content moderation.

Pricing is usage-based, per minute of video, with free monthly allowances; prepaid credit plans and enterprise contracts are also offered.
