Vite is a frontend build tool for modern web projects: it runs the development server while code is written and bundles the code for production. Its name is the French word for "quick". It is developed by VoidZero Inc. and the Vite contributors.
Vite has two main parts. The dev server serves source files on demand over native ES modules (the module system built into browsers) and pre-bundles dependencies. With Hot Module Replacement (HMR), a change appears in the browser right after the file is saved, without a full page reload. The build command bundles the code with Rolldown into optimized static files, using tree-shaking (removal of unused code), minification and chunking. TypeScript, JSX, CSS, Web Workers and WebAssembly work out of the box. Plugins, which extend Rollup's plugin interface, add support for frameworks, and project templates exist for Vue, React, Preact, Lit, Svelte, Solid and Qwik. Vite also supports server-side rendering (SSR). The current version is 8.3.4.
Vite is free and open source under the MIT license.
