DigitalOcean is a cloud provider made by DigitalOcean, LLC. Its basic product is the Droplet, a virtual machine (VM): a share of a physical server that behaves like a separate computer with its own operating system, CPU, memory and disk. Droplets come in types for different loads, from Basic for low-traffic web servers to CPU-Optimized, Memory-Optimized and GPU Droplets for media streaming, batch processing, video rendering and AI work.
A user creates and manages Droplets in the web dashboard, with a command-line tool, through an API (an interface that other programs call) or with Terraform, so a script can add or remove servers as the load changes. Each Droplet includes monitoring, cloud firewalls and 500 GiB of outbound data transfer a month. Around the Droplets, DigitalOcean sells managed Kubernetes, managed databases, Spaces object storage and an App Platform that runs apps without server management, and it now also offers AI inference and agent services.
It is a hosted service; each resource has usage-based or monthly pricing.
