Metabase

An open-source business intelligence tool: it connects to a company's database and lets staff build charts, dashboards and reports, with or without writing SQL.

What Metabase is

Written from its maker's own pages, read on 28 October 2026.

Metabase is an open-source business intelligence (BI) tool, software that connects to a company's databases and turns the data into charts, dashboards and reports that people outside the data team can use. It is made by the company Metabase.

Metabase connects to a database or data warehouse; more than 20 data sources are supported. People ask questions with a visual query builder that needs no SQL, or write SQL in an editor, and the results become interactive dashboards with filters and drill-downs. Metabot, the built-in AI assistant, answers questions in plain English on top of a semantic layer, a curated set of tables and metric definitions, and shows the query behind each answer. Alerts and dashboard subscriptions send results by email, Slack or webhook. Metabase can also be embedded in another product as customer-facing analytics.

The Open Source edition is released under the AGPL license and is free to self-host, for example with one Docker command. Metabase Cloud is the hosted version; its paid plans are monthly or yearly subscriptions with a base price and a fee for each extra user.
