CleanShot X

A screenshot and screen recording app for Mac: it captures, annotates and edits images and videos, and shares them as links through its own cloud.

What CleanShot X is

Written from its maker's own pages, read on 28 October 2026.

CleanShot X is a screen capture app for macOS made by MTW. It takes screenshots and screen recordings, edits them and shares them. It runs only on the Mac; there is no Windows version.

Screenshots can be marked up, redacted to hide sensitive data, given backgrounds and cropped. Scrolling capture records content longer than the screen in one image, and on-device text recognition (OCR, reading text from images) copies text from any picture. Recordings can include a webcam bubble, highlighted clicks, shown keystrokes, and voice and system audio, and export as MP4 or GIF. Studio Mode, a built-in video editor, adds zooms and trims mistakes. CleanShot Cloud uploads a capture and returns a link, with comments, automatic transcripts, custom domains, and SSO for teams. A URL scheme API lets other programs control the app.

The app is sold as a one-time purchase with one year of updates and 1 GB of cloud storage, or as a Pro subscription with unlimited storage and team features. It needs macOS 13.0 or newer.
