Jira

Atlassian's project management and issue tracking tool, where teams break work into tasks, assign them and follow their progress on boards and reports.

What Jira is

Written from its maker's own pages, read on 28 October 2026.

Jira is a project management and issue tracking tool from Atlassian. A team records each piece of work as a work item and moves it through a workflow, a sequence of statuses that the team can customize. Atlassian describes features for every stage of software development, and the tool also serves marketing, design, operations and IT teams.

Teams break big projects into tasks, assign them, and follow progress in boards, lists, timelines or calendars. Templates cover agile sprints (short, fixed work periods) and marketing campaigns. Fields and workflows can be customized, automation rules move work forward, forms collect requests from partner teams, and reports show engineering cycle time, burndown charts and capacity. Jira connects to Confluence, Figma, Slack, Gmail and other tools and offers APIs. It includes Rovo, Atlassian's AI assistant, and gives AI coding agents access through MCP and a command-line tool.

Jira is a cloud service sold as a subscription per user per month, with a free plan for up to 10 users and paid Standard, Premium and Enterprise plans.
