Linear is an issue tracker, a tool in which a software team records each piece of work (a bug, a feature, a follow-up task) as an item that moves through a sequence of statuses. Its maker, Linear, calls it a product development system for teams and AI agents.
Issues are the basic unit of work. Each issue belongs to a team and moves through that team's workflow; it can be assigned, labeled, prioritized and planned into a cycle, a repeating planning period of a fixed number of weeks. Projects group related issues around one deliverable, and initiatives group projects around a broader goal. Intake features turn Slack conversations and customer feedback into issues, GitHub automations link issues to pull requests, and the Linear Agent and coding sessions let AI agents take part in the work. An API and webhooks connect it to other software.
Linear is a hosted service. A free plan allows 250 issues and 2 teams; paid plans are subscriptions priced per user per month.
