Sketch

A design tool for macOS: designers draw app and website screens with vectors, build clickable prototypes and hand designs to developers through a web app.

What Sketch is

Written from its maker's own pages, read on 28 October 2026.

Sketch is a design tool for interface design, made by Sketch B.V., an independent company. Its editor is a native Mac app, built only for macOS, that works on an infinite canvas; a web app in any browser and an iPhone and iPad app complete it.

Designers draw anything from icons to full app screens with a vector editor (shapes defined by points and curves, so they scale without losing quality), and arrange them with stack layouts and nestable frames. Templates, frame presets and shared component libraries help a team build a design system. Prototypes take a few clicks: Smart Animate adds movement, overlays create modals and menus, and testers can hover, press, drag and swipe. Work happens offline and locally or in real-time co-editing. Developers inspect files, download assets and export design tokens for free in the web app, and AI clients such as Claude or Cursor connect to designs through MCP.

Sketch is sold as a subscription per editor, with free viewers, or as a Mac-only license that is kept forever and includes one year of updates. A 30-day free trial is available.
